Prepareness for hurricane IRENE

Post by tbhuynh »

Hello all,

Please be aware of the following items as Irene appears to be coming to visit whether we want her to or not. We will be closing the pool sometime tomorrow (Friday). We must place a lock on the gate in case we lose electricity and the pool card system fails. Sorry for the inconvenience in closing the pool a little early. The pool furniture will also be secured for the storm. We will restore access to the pool and pool furniture ASAP, probably on Monday.

I am sure you understand we cannot make specific recommendations to home owners regarding storm preparedness. However, we have included some information below which could be helpful, it is up to you if you feel any of this information is helpful to your situation. Everyone is different. We can state that if you want something to be there after the storm, you should store it inside or tie/nail it down or it probably will not be. This will include but not limited to: your trash tote, planters, patio furniture, lawn ornaments, flags, BBQ grills, golf carts, bicycles, porch decorations, canoe’s, kayak’s, bird baths, statues of Mary/St. Francis and anything else you can think of where you would say “I didn’t think that would blow away”.

Please keep in mind that grilling on any elevated deck, balcony, walkway, etc. is strictly forbidden by the State Fire Marshall’s office (even if you lose use of your stove). Batten down the hatches, get your supplies, fill up the car and good luck to all.

The Delaware Electric Coop sent out this message…

Hurricane Irene is expected to bring heavy rain and high winds into our area beginning Saturday evening and extending into Sunday, which could cause widespread and extended outages.

Should any disruption of service occur please know that your Co-op will work hard to restore your power safely and as quickly as possible.

Delaware Electric Cooperative wants to remind everyone that preparing for a power outage as a result of severe weather is extremely important. Everyone is encouraged to assemble an outage kit with the following items and follow these recommendations to help ensure their family's safety and comfort:

Flashlights
Batteries
First Aid Kit
Paper plates, cups and plastic utensils
Battery operated radio or TV
Extra blankets or sleeping bags
Stored water
Portable fire extinguisher
Candles and Matches
Canned goods or easily prepared foods
Hand operated can opener
Necessary prescription drugs
Never touch or go near fallen wires, even if you think they are safe. Parents can use this opportunity to remind children that wires are dangerous.
If you are in a vehicle that comes in contact with a downed wire, stay in your vehicle until help arrives.
If an electric pump supplies your water, fill spare food-grade containers with water for cooking and washing in anticipation of a possible power interruption.
Keep the refrigerator door closed. Food will keep several hours in a closed refrigerator and up to two days in a freezer. If you must open the door, be quick!
If you have an elderly neighbor, be a Good Samaritan and check on their status. Even a quick telephone call can provide much appreciated assurance that help is nearby if needed.
SAFETY FIRST ALWAYS

While we certainly hope that Hurricane Irene does not harm our area in any way, it is best to "be prepared" just in case.

Delaware Electric Cooperative members living in Sussex County who experience an outage should call the emergency service line at 349-9009.
Thank You,
Doug Nichols

To Fairfield's Homeowners/neighbors,

We would appreciate if you could post any information of any damage from the hurricane to help those who live away to know what has happened.

Good luck to all
